I get a lot of requests to do reviews – reviews for books especially, but many vendors want me to try out their products for free and write a review as well, for anything from personal lubricant to perfume. Mostly, I turn these down, because I’ve discovered my most valuable commodity of late is time, and doing product reviews takes time.
The one exception to this rule is vibrators. I’m a sex-toy junkie (says the woman who owns a Sybian…) and if I like the look of the toy, I’m always ready to take it for a test drive. So when I was contacted by Ladygasm to review their new silicone rechargeable female sex toy, I said: “Bring it on!”
I was excited to try out the “portable silicone luxury toy” that is the Ladygasm Colibri. The box is beautiful, the toy resting in a velvet case, and it even has its own pretty purple drawstring bag. The toy itself is also purple, and it’s incredibly soft and supple. Just feeling it in my hands was exciting. The whole presentation definitely says “luxury!”
My favorite part about this toy was that it’s WATERPROOF! We have a giant Jacuzzi tub, and I couldn’t wait to see if this claim proved true. But first I thought I’d try it out on land. Like most of the Ladygasm toys, the Colibri is rechargeable, so I had to cool my jets for an hour while I plugged it in and waited for it to charge. I busied myself writing a particularly sexy scene – always guaranteed to put me in the mood to play with a new toy – and before I knew it, the hour was up!
The Colibri is a clitoral stimulator, not a dildo, and its buttons are hidden under the surface. It took me a moment to adjust to their use. I was surprised at how loud it was, even on the lowest setting. Unless I’m riding something powerful (like my Sybian) I’m into whisper-quiet toys, and this one definitely didn’t fit that bill. I was also surprised, given its decibel levels, that the intensity wasn’t greater.
After some experimentation, even getting it up to its highest level, I was disappointed, and abandoned it for my trusty Lelo to get the job done. I decided to put it aside for a while and try it again later—the next time in water. A few days later, my husband and I were in the tub, and I remembered the Colibri. He was all for watching me experiment, so I retrieved the toy.
I was a little trepidatious, because I didn’t want to get electrocuted, but Ladygasm was true to their word, the toy was indeed waterproof. The good news was that it was far less loud in the water. The bad news is the intensity hadn’t increased, and even at its highest level, it wasn’t doing it for me. I didn’t abandon it so quickly this time, though – I kept at it, and eventually reached my destination, but not without a bit of frustration.
I don’t know if I’ve just been spoiled by power tools like the Sybian, but this little clitoral stimulator was far too noisy for what little power it put out. It’s a beautiful toy, but it just isn’t for me.
PROS: rechargeable, waterproof, silicone (velvety soft and smooth), 7 mode intensity
CONS: too loud even on the lowest setting, difficult to handle, awkward, vibration not intense enough, expensive: $74.95
Overall Grade: C
